Vehicle Registration and Titling
In compliance with Virginia code 46.2-600, all vehicles owned and operated by Virginia residents must be registered and titled by the DMV. This can be accomplished at a DMV Customer Service Center (CSC) or at a DMV Select location.
This applies to cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and motorcycles. Effective July 2014, mopeds must follow these guidelines as well.
- You do not need to have a driver’s license to operate a moped in Virginia, as long as it does not travel faster than 30mph. If found to be traveling at speeds of 35mps or greater, you may be ticketed for operating a moped without a driver’s license.
If you are a new Virginia resident, additional documentation will be required before you can title your vehicle. It is suggested that you contact the Virginia DMV beforehand to ascertain what will be required.
Virginia law mandates all vehicles receive an annual safety inspection, with key safety features inspected per the Virginia State Police. Operating a vehicle without a valid inspection sticker may result in fines and negative points on your driving record.
