Types of Roadways

A roadway is a paved or unpaved route on which you move in order to reach your intended destination. Roadways are sorted into sub-types depending on where they are, from county roads made of gravel to major asphalt and concrete expressways. The major sub-divisions of roads are:

  • Freeways
  • Expressways
  • Highways
  • Arterials
  • Local Streets
  • Collector Roads
  • Rural Roads

Roads are classified based on different criteria, but the most important distinguishing factors are location, speed, and construction materials. For our purposes here, we will focus on understanding how location and speed define roadways. Let’s look at characteristics of Urban, Suburban, and Rural roads.
