Virginia Driver’s License Requirements

Applicants less than 18 years old AND must be at least 16 years and three months old.

Practice driving with a learneru2019s permit for at least nine months.

Successfully complete an approved driver education program (classroom and in-car).

Have parent/guardian permission.

A parent/guardian must certify the applicant has driven a motor vehicle for 45 hours, at least 15 of which were after sunset.

Note: the 180-day provisional license issued by your in-car driver education teacher is a valid Virginia driveru2019s license when accompanied by a valid Virginia learneru2019s permit.
